LA WEEKLY this week.. - May 7, 2008

This great recommendation for our show just came out! THanks LA Weekly... btw, Brandon played guitar w Nancy Sinatra and Rachael Yamagata, never produced 'em. Sorry for any confusion..

The Deadbirds at the Bordello

Since he moved into the now-gentrified Villa Elaine a decade ago, Brandon McCulloch’s world on Vine Street has become something of a legend. The entrepreneurial busker first founded Substance Records and released a haunting compilation called California from the arty derelicts who hung about/squatted there (Remy Zero, Spacetwins, Aaron Embry, et al.), before releasing his ex-band Silver’s elegiac Red City in 2002 — an album that solidified him further as an artist’s artist rather than a household name. Even still, McCulloch helped make the Hotel Café a recognizable venue with his early residencies there, and whenever he straps on the acoustic at the Three Clubs, he’s received like Lou Reed. After taking some time off to help produce tracks for the likes of Nancy Sinatra and Rachael Yamagata, McCulloch returns with a gentler power yearn in his new band, he Deadbirds, who replace Silver’s coked-up keys-and-guitar arrangements with violins and sedatives. Annie Wait on YouTube - January 13, 2008

Hey guys, I'm going to be posting videos of the recording process of the new songs for the Brandon McCulloch and the Deadbirds debut record. This first one is up now. These aren't really supposed to be music videos, just windows into the recording studio. This video is 3 different shots/angles of the 3 vocal passes I recorded for one of the new songs "Annie Wait." They will get better I promise!

08 - January 3, 2008

Bukowski Thansgiving Morning - November 23, 2007

I had no plans to visit family for the holiday this year, so I went to my local breakfast place, the 101. I ordered a Mikey Fitz, sub French Toast, eggs over medium, and bacon. Large coke. I opened the LA weekly, and read an article about Charles Bukowski's apartment being torn down. This is the place he wrote Post Office, Factotum and did his "research" for Women. The address was published - 5124 De Longpre. I scarfed down my food and drove toward the De Longpre address. After a few wrong turns, I pulled up to 5124. There was a high 'temporary' fence around the property. There was another guy leaning on the fence looking in, and another in a car, gawking from the street. Old women and gangsters sat outside their houses watching the parade of greasy readers staring at the condemned dump next door. It was perfect.

Infected Mushroom - November 12, 2007

A friend forwarded this quote from DJmag.com..

"Acclaimed underground spitters The Swollen Members appeared on the swirling electronic hip-hop of ‘Artillery’, avant-garde Latin rockers Kinky added a flamenco urgency to the stadium nu-metal psy-trance of ‘Becoming Insane’, whilst cult US rock vocalist Brandon McCulloch is featured on the downtempo ballad ‘In Front Of Me'."

I personally would never join a cult that would have me as a member.
